Ben Roethlisberger’s head snapped back on this play in which Michael Bennett was called for roughing the passer. He remained in the game for the duration of the drive, which culminated in a Big Ben scramble on third-and-goal, and then a Pittsburgh field goal. After that drive, Roethlisberger headed to the locker room. The Steelers announced the quarterback was going through the league’s concussion protocol, and Landry Jones entered the game.
If the roughing the passer play was the one that caused Roethlisberger to be tested, that should have happened during that drive, not after it. Given the debacle with the Rams and Case Keenum last week, teams should have especially been extra vigilant now. There is perhaps a chance that the scramble play was what caused Roethlisberger to be tested, but there will deservedly be some scrutiny over the next day or two about how this all was handled — especially if Big Ben is diagnosed with a concussion.
