Joffrey Lauvergne leaves Bulls to sign with Spurs

Per Shams Charania of The Vertical, Joffrey Lauvergne just signed with the Spurs.

Heading into the offseason, Lauvergne was a restricted free agent. But the Bulls pulled his 1-yr, $2.1m qualifying offer late last week, making him unrestricted and available to sign with any other team without the Bulls having the right to match.

King Joffrey played 20 games (and hilariously, 3 playoff games) for the Bulls after coming over from Oklahoma City midseason. He’ll join other luminaries such as Hakim Warrick and Shannon Brown as GarPax trade deadline acquisitions who didn’t last past the half-season. Lauvergne will turn 26 before this coming campaign, so still somewhat young, but he undoubtedly wasn’t, as GarPax would say, “a guy we liked”. It’s more likely he’ll do fine in a real organization like San Antonio.

Ya know, if the Bulls continue to peddle (with the media’s help) that they actually received 3 lottery picks for Jimmy Butler (reminder: they didn’t), can’t we make this same argument?

Indeed, Lauvergne came over in the disastrous deal with Oklahoma City that included Doug McDermott, who himself was a completely awful trade. Let’s recap.

  • 2 first round picks and a second-rounder to move up and select McDermott
  • 2 second round picks to offload Anthony Randolph’s contract as master negotiator GarPax (hey, the market’s the market!) had that foisted on them by Denver
  • Included another 2nd round pick with McDermott and Taj Gibson (if we wanted to take this further, he was also acquired using a first round pick...hmm...) in trade to Oklahoma City
  • Received the recently departed Lauvergne, the likely-gone Anthony Morrow, leaving only Cameron Payne.

Don’t worry, Payne himself was once a lottery pick. And things are looking up:
