U.S. Open: Five Guys Who Aren't Chalk to Put Your Money On

With the U.S. Open starting on Thursday, many people will be looking at odds to try and make a little money. Of course most of the money will be placed on Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy, but if you’re looking for a couple of guys who aren’t straight chalk, here are five that could net you a profit.

Hideki Matsuyama

Matsuyama has never finished higher than fifth in a major and his best finish at the U.S. Open was a tie for 10th in 2013, but I like him. I like his swing, the way he pauses on his follow through, and I like the fact that he’s so consistent that you can basically write him into the top 20 in almost every event he plays in. This season, Matsuyama has finished outside the top 20 only once, not including missed cuts and withdrawals.

Odds – 35/1

Branden Grace was in position to win, or at least give Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson a run until he sprayed a drive onto the train tracks, or possibly into the Pacific Ocean on the 70th hole. He wound up finished tied for fourth and just two strokes back of Jordan Spieth. Grace also finished the PGA Championship alone in third. Grace also won the RBC Heritage the week after he missed the cut at the Masters. His last event was the Players, so he should be fully focused and prepared mentally for this week. He’s actually a pretty solid bet.

Odds – 40/1

Brooks Koepka

I included Brooks on my favorites list in my U.S. Open preview. He’s playing well coming into this tournament and has the game to get the job done. If you want to know why I think he can win, click the link above!

Odds – 50/1

Sergio Garcia

I’m not sure I should include Sergio on this list because I’m not sure Sergio wants to be on this list at this point in his career. He’s yet to win a major championship although he does have a win this year, albeit not on the PGA Tour. Sergio’s last run at a major was in 2014 at The Open Championship. His highest finish at the U.S. Open was in 2005 when he tied for third. If you want to take a shot in hopes that he’ll finally win a major, be my guest, but don’t come crying to me when you lose your five dollars.

Odds – 50/1

Brandt Snedeker

Sneds has a win this year at the Farmers Insurance Open, he and teammate Jason Dufner also won the Franklin Templeton Shootout. After finishing tied for 10th at the Masters, Snedeker’s record isn’t pretty. He missed the cut at the Players and again at the AT&T Byron Nelson, but did finish tied for 17th at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational. He’s a long shot, but it could happen.

Odds – 50/1
