LeBron James has had a hell of a run since the Cavs went down 3-1 in the NBA Finals. As he prophesied in his Going Home letter, he’s delivered a championship to Cleveland. However, the operative word is “a” title, and now that he’s done so there has been rampant speculation that he could again head elsewhere.
With his words to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, however, it doesn’t sound like LeBron is leaving as of yet:
“I love it here. I love being here. I love my teammates,” James told cleveland.com, moments before he boarded a float at The Q for the Cavs’ championship parade through downtown Cleveland. “Obviously my agent will take care of all the logistical things but, I’m happy. I’ve got no plans to go nowhere at this point.”
Now, LeBron left himself a small out with “plans” and “at this point.” He still needs to opt out for a raise from $24 million next season to $30 million on account of the rising salary cap, and there are undoubtedly other carrots he’d like to extract from Dan Gilbert before he signs his name to anything. Personnel moves, perks for his inner circle, and who knows what else will be on the table.
That being said, it seems far more likely than not right now that LeBron will indeed return to the Cavs to lead their title defense next season. We’ll see if it stays that way.
