Hungary has been one of the surprise teams of Euro 2016. A notable figure has been their 40-year-old goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly. He’s the oldest player to appear at the Euros. He also looks like a bus driver. Not a bus driver at work, mind you, but a bus driver at home on a 90-degree off day, inexplicably tucking full-length sweatpants into his socks.
Kiraly explained his sweatpants preference as a “physical and psychological thing,” which perhaps raises more questions than it answers. It’s purportedly one of “thousands” of his superstitions, including only driving a Mini Cooper. Even by goalkeeping standards, he’s weird.
An even greater mystery: whatever the heck was going on here, seconds before Hungary was set to advance to its first knockout stage since 1972…
