Letroy Guion Got His Truck and $190,028.81 Cash Back from Police

Letroy Guion was arrested in February with about a pound of marijuana and $190,028.81 cash. The money, along with a Dodge Ram truck, were seized by police, and the Packers defensive tackle just got it back. The news of the assets return was broken by Rob Demovsky of ESPN. Guion maintains that the cash came from his Packers paycheck, says that he’s “rejuvenated,” and hopes to strike a long-term deal with the Packers.

At the time of the arrest, I wrote that the seizure, and ensuing photo op, was emblematic of the way dope on the table is covered by mass media. This past October, there was a long report in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel about Guion’s background, which uncovered two previously unreported domestic violence allegations. They were both from before Guion was a Packer, and in one of the incidents the defensive lineman received deferred prosecution on battery charges. After the story was published, one of the reporters was allegedly bullied by a Packers employee.

Returning to Guion’s earlier points about feeling rejuvenated and hoping to strike a long-term deal, he has not played as well this season as last. Last year he started all 16 games, he had 3.5 sacks, and it felt like he was always stuffing a run for a loss. This year he has just seven tackles, and has not been impactful. Whether this was because of the overhanging legal ramifications or because of the accrued attrition on a football player’s body by the time he approaches 30 — or some combination of the two — is unknowable.
