Bowl season has arrived. Here are five to avoid, if possible.
Citrus Bowl [Florida vs. Michigan] Last carousel’s two biggest hires meet, after successful seasons. Florida has no offense, against a very good Michigan defense. Michigan won’t have enough offense to score on a very good Florida defense. There isn’t even novelty. Michigan and Florida have faced off twice in bowl games since 2003.
Taxslayer Bowl [Penn State vs. Georgia] Georgia has no quarterback. Penn State has no offensive line. The Bulldogs fired their head coach. The Nittany Lions fired their offensive coordinator. Both teams have strong, Top 15-20 defenses. This game should be unwatchable. Fans, and the unaffiliated have suffered enough with these teams.
Foster Farms [UCLA vs. Nebraska] The bowl field expanded to 40 this year. Thus, Nebraska, who went 4-7 vs. FBS teams, earned a place in the postseason. That, right there, is the sign we have too many bowl games. More Tommy Armstrong arm punts, brought to you by a company that could find a different way to advertise.
Quick Lane Bowl [Central Michigan vs. Minnesota] Fire up Chips! Dan Enos left to be an offensive coordinator at Arkansas. New head coach John Bonamego underwent cancer treatment during the offseason. Central Michigan is heading to a bowl game. Fantastic. Their reward? A trip to Detroit, for the sixth time in seven bowl trips to face a Minnesota team that went 2-7 against Power 5 opponents.
St. Petersburg Bowl [Connecticut vs. Marshall] On December 26, Christmas will be 364 days away. Winter will be staring much of the country in the face. What more fitting reminder than UConn and Marshall trying to out-defense each other bright and early at 11:00am?
