Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott has issued an apology for his comments following the Buckeyes’ home loss to Michigan State on Saturday. The Heisman Trophy contender expressed frustration at his lack of involvement in the offense and disappointment in the coaching effort. Additionally, he confirmed he’ll be declaring for the NFL draft after this season.
His statements were widely scrutinized. Some said they’d adversely affect his draft stock. Others lauded him for his honesty. Those standing on the middle ground suggested although he was well within his rights to speak out, a different tact would have been advisable.
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said today that Elliott would not face any discipline for his comments.
In his apology, Elliott says he regrets creating an controversy and that he’s focused on this weekend’s rivalry game against Michigan.
Reasonable minds can disagree on whether such a statement of contrition was needed. But anyone who went hard at Elliott should take note that he’s owning the moment in a mature fashion.
Practically speaking, the Buckeyes cannot wait to see this story line disappear. It’s bizarre that there’s enough going on to wonder about the team’s focus on Michigan. Especially considering Meyer’s team still has a slim shot at a national championship.
