A Texas A&M regent wants the Aggies to play Texas in football. Not because it would be the continuation of a rich rivalry but rather because the Longhorns are, according to him, a “cupcake.”
Tony Buzbee shared his opinion on Facebook yesterday.
Texas A&M is 8-9 in conference play since moving to the SEC. Buzbee is quick to point out he’s only one of nine regents and hasn’t discussed his idea with coach Kevin Sumlin, athletic director Eric Hyman or, really, anyone who could make this dream a reality.
The Aggies’ non-conference schedule this year includes games against Arizona State, Ball State, Nevada and Western Carolina. The instate foes last played in 2011, when the Longhorns won, 27-25.
Buzbee may know what he’s doing here. Step one: stir the pot by poking a traditional power down on its luck. Step two: create discussion and animosity. Step three: force the teams to battle it out on the football field.
If recent history has taught us anything, though, it’s to be careful about throwing the “cupcake” slur around haphazardly. Popular Mechanics did that and singlehandedly turned Utah into an unstoppable force.
