UCF is off to an 0-4 start. This is bad news for fans. One Orlando bar, however, thinks it has just the idea to dull the pain.
Free beer until the Knights win.
The Basement, an establishment once packed with happy fans, has seen interest wane as George O’Leary’s squad struggles. It will now serve free domestic suds during games, from kickoff to the final whistle.
Jeff Whitacre, the bar’s marketing director and disappointed UCF alum, is already calling it a success.
Whitacre said there has been so much buzz about the promotion, since the bar made the announcement on Monday, that the ownership is going to open up the nightclub above The Basement to accommodate an overflow crowd of up to 200 more people.
While one has to appreciate the hustle and business savvy, this probably isn’t the best way to get a disgruntled fan base behind the team. Wins are great and all but who in their right mind would want the free alcohol spigot turned off?
Let’s take a look at the Knights’ upcoming schedule to see just how much beer will be given away.
Two winnable games (at Tulane and against Connecticut) come before a tough stretch of at Temple, Houston, at Cincinnati, at Tulsa and South Carolina.
The season finale is against instate rival South Florida.
I guess this is a no-lose situation for fans. Might be some friction between the diehards and those who just want to booze it up on the cheap, though.
