Welcome to MLB Delly on a Thursday. Once again our headline is SEO Optimized, baby!
Knight Fall: Oh to be a fan of the New York Mets, a team as the saying goes, that can’t have nice things. Tuesday the Mets were no-hit by unheralded rookie Chris Heston. Wednesday Matt Harvey went to the mound and allowed three home runs over six innings, striking out only two batters in an 8-5 loss. Boo.
Naturally, Mets fans on social media were cool, calm and composed about Harvey’s loss, as that’s one fanbase which is never prone to wild mood swings and negativity. The New York media joined in the party. Here’s some of the headlines Google news produced this morning:
- ESPN: Mets ace Matt Harvey all too human
- Newsday: Matt Harvey’s struggles a sobering reminder
- New York Post: Matt Harvey won’t accept the likely truth for his drop-off
- Daily News: Matt Harvey needs to be ace that digs out of hole or Mets will be in serious trouble
- NJ.com: What’s wrong with Mets ace Matt Harvey? ‘Something needs to change’
You get the picture. Harvey is struggling and coming off Tommy John surgery. The Mets toyed with the idea of a six-man rotation to lessen his workload, so expect that to come up again. Although the Mets are skidding back to .500, thanks to the Nationals inability to win consistently New York remains a half game out of first. It’s conceivable the team sticks around in the Wild Card, so Terry Collins et al need to manage Harvey’s innings — he’s at about 80 right now.
My guess is the always-rational thinkers who call WFAN will have this sorted out by lunchtime.
Less encouraging for the Mets was news on Wednesday the team looked into acquiring Aramis Ramirez from the Brewers. That would indicate how unlikely it is that David Wright returns from his spinal issue this year.
Staying in New York: The Yankees lost lights-out closer Andrew Miller to the DL yesterday with a forearm issue. Fans quickly blamed Joe Girardi since he used Miller to get the final out Tuesday night with the Yankees up 6-1 in the ninth vs. the Nats. Yep. Miller, who is 17-for-17 in save situations, cited “fatigue” and told the team after the game. He won’t touch a ball for 10-14 days so he could be out for a while. The Yankees can slot Delin Betances in to close, but losing their ninth-inning guy in Miller is a huge loss since the bullpen is the team’s clear strength. The duo have combined to allow four earned runs in 58 2/3 innings. Betances has an obscene 54 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.
Vote for Josh: The slugging Jays won their eighth straight, clubbing out four home runs in the process. Scott Copeland made his first start in the Majors and held the Marlins to one run over seven. Josh Donaldson homered and made a couple outstanding bare-handed plays at third base. Please vote for him in the All-Star Game.
Highlight reel, Think Blue Edition: If you like Dodgers highlights, you’re in luck. First up is Joc Pederson’s leaping grab to rob Yasmany Tomas of a home run:
Yasiel Puig crushed a homer to center on his way to a 4-for-4 night. He’s batting .362 in 58 at bats this year.
There were so many highlights from this game, including a Howie Kendrick walk-off single I’ll just add this link if you want to watch them all.
Is that bad?:
Yeah, this seems bad, too:
#TBT: Apropos of nothing, here’s Chris Sabo hitting two home runs in the 1990 World Series.
This & That: ICYMI Adam Jones made some great defensive plays last night as the Orioles got to Rick Porcello again. … The Royals swept the Twins, as Torii Hunter blew a gasket. … The White Sox hit a couple dingers in the late innings, sending Houston to its seventh straight loss.
