Joey Votto Conned Everyone Into a Three-Pitch Walk

Joey Votto probably owns the most-discerning eye in baseball. His patience at the plate riled up Reds’ broadcasters before the start of the season under the premise on-base percentage is a bad thing … or something. Votto’s reputation contributed on Sunday when he trotted to first base after the third ball thrown by Nationals reliever Matt Grace. The crazy thing here is NOBODY batted an eye. The announcers didn’t pick up on it. Grace didn’t seem upset Votto went to first. The AP gamer notes neither manager was asked about it.

In the endless sea of things that happen during the course of a baseball season this isn’t that big of a deal, but you’d think someone would have picked up on it.

Or maybe Votto is serious about baseball’s increased devotion to speedier games.

I’d guess Votto’s phantom three-pitch walk will not be talked about years from now like the infamous “Fifth Down” play between Colorado and Missouri in 1989.
