Tom Thibodeau has been fired by the Bulls after five seasons in Chicago, the team has announced. Thibs compiled a 255-139 record in the regular season, where he often made lemonade out of lemons, but his teams were just 23-28 in the playoffs. ESPN’s Nick Friedell compiled a timeline of the coach’s feud with front office executives John Paxson and Gar Forman; his exit became a matter of when and not if. Fortuitously for him, he exits with $9 million remaining on his deal.

As far as who coaches the team next, the two candidates whose names have popped up the most are Fred Hoiberg and Alvin Gentry. Hoiberg, the head coach at Iowa State, has been rumored for over a year to be Thibs’ successor, but just had heart surgery last month. Gentry is an assistant on the Warriors, and his most recent head coaching position was with the Phoenix Suns.
