Fox Sports hires Andy Petree as NASCAR rules expert

Petree will be the NASCAR equivalent of Mike Pereira during Fox Sports’ NASCAR coverage.

As NASCAR emphasizes technology and de-emphasizes the human element on how it monitors and enforces pit road penalties this season, Fox Sports has named former crew chief and team owner Andy Petree as its rules analyst.

Petree's responsibility will include an explanation of any technical violations that occur. It's parallel to the role former NFL referee Mike Pereira fills during Fox's NFL and college football coverage.

"Andy will work into the role of ‘rules guru,' giving our audience a strong and consistent point of reference from the broadcast booth," said John Entz, FOX Sports EVP of Production/Executive Producer

That Fox hired a rules expert is smart, as NASCAR's new pit road system featuring 45 HD cameras will likely result in an increase in penalties, especially early in the season as drivers and teams adjust. The most likely infractions to be called are crew members jumping off pit wall prematurely and drivers going through more than three pit stalls entering or exiting their own.

Before joining Fox, Petree was a color analyst for ESPN and a championship-winning crew chief for Dale Earnhardt in 1993-94.
