Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were among those running the 40-yard dash on Saturday. One of them did considerably better than the other.
The NFL Combine is in full swing as the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs found their way onto the field for drills and workouts Saturday. The main event was the 40-yard dash for wide receivers, which we talk about here, but also of note is the same event, but for quarterbacks.
Of course, the 40-yard dash can be important for quarterbacks depending on their style of play. Given the rise of quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick in today's NFL, speed over that distance is important. That said, quarterbacks don't typically light up the 40-yard dash, but that doesn't take away from the spectacle in any way.
For instance, the fact that Marcus Mariota of Oregon handily beat Jameis Winston of Florida State is big news, even if it ultimately means little in the discussion of which player is better or should go off the board first in the 2015 NFL Draft. Mariota ran an unofficial 4.52, while Winston ran an unofficial 4.97. Mariota actually posted the fasted time of any quarterback:
Mariota's time is actually very impressive outside of the battle with Winston. He has also shown well in the broad jump and vertical leap, but his 40 time is the best for any quarterback since 2012:
Marcus Mariota's unofficial 4.52 40-time is the fastest by a QB at the combine since RGIII ran a 4.41 in 2012.
