St. John's is losing to the D-II Franklin Pierce Ravens

Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States, died in 1869, and he's beating St. John's tonight.

A lot of early-season games feature Division II and NAIA teams playing Division I teams. Through the first three days of the season, Division I teams are 60-0. (Memphis' loss to Christian Brothers was an exhibition, and did not count.) That could change tonight.

Yup, Division II Franklin Pierce -- the Ravens! -- are leading St. John's at the half in the preseason NIT fixture, thanks to a 21-point half by Ryen Vilmont. Vilmont drained 5-of-6 threes and Franklin Pierce led by as much as eight.

Coming in, I saw no way this was possible:

But despite Pierce's in-office failure to deal with Bleeding Kansas and his general inability to quell tensions between the North and South before the Civil War, he proved me wrong:

If you must know: Franklin Pierce is located in Rindge, N.H., Pierce's home state, and is home to 1,400 undergrads. Temple Grandin went there!
