New Hints on who the Chicago Bulls may be targeting in the draft

Fifty days until NBA draft day!

....and today we got some hints on who the Bulls may pick.

It feels like new Bulls executive Arturas Karnisovas could go a few different directions with the pick, adding an air of mystery to a team that has drafted very predictably in recent years. Obviously, if Gar Forman and John Paxson were in charge, Iowa State guard Tyrese Haliburton would already be apartment hunting in Chicago after receiving a promise from the team.

As I said, Karnisovas is a bit less predictable, but today we learned a few things as NBA reporters got their first cracks at NBA draft talent.

For starters, the Bulls are giving an extended look to French point guard Killian Hayes.

It’s a wee bit interesting the Bulls would look at Hayes. If you believe that Coby White looks like the first “point guard of the future” since Derrick Rose to actually have “point guard of the future” potential, maybe this lessens that: the Bulls would envision White as a microwave scorer off the bench and Hayes as the engine that makes the first-unit offense run.

There was a surprise name who revealed he interviewed with the Bulls, Maryland’s Jalen Smith. If Smith wasn’t on your radar, that’s because he’s landing in the teens in most mock drafts. Is the fact the Bulls are showing interest in him indicate their intentions to trade down? Or is this just due diligence?

One guy who hasn’t interviewed with the Bulls is LaMelo Ball according to NBC Sports Chicago’s K.C. Johnson. Although Johnson did describe Ball as very aloof when asked which teams he’s talked with at all, really only confirming the New York Knicks.

The Bulls showing interest in Hayes and Smith could be indications of their intent to trade down, but with just under two months left until the big night a lot can change.
