The College Football Playoff Will Consider Moving From New Year’s Eve

Common sense takes a while in college football, but it prevails, sometimes. The College Football Playoff is exploring “alternatives” to New Year’s Eve playoff games, beginning in 2018.

2018 is the first time it would make sense to change the date. New Year’s Eve after the 2016 season is a Saturday, an optimal time to show college football. After 2017, the playoff reverts to the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl, so the semifinals would be held on New Year’s Day.

Moving off New Year’s Eve makes sense. Semifinal ratings declined by nearly a third last season, with a significant financial hit for ESPN. Some of that was Ohio State not being in it. Much of it was the casual audience working or, gasp, having New Year’s Eve plans.

Once this gets straightened out, the playoff committee may be able to address why they burden themselves with relentless, inane busy work for the entire season to no purpose.
