Report: Cubs, Yankees Working On Aroldis Chapman Trade

Aroldis Chapman may be closing in on the end of his brief tenure with the New York Yankees. While several teams have attempted to pry him from the Bronx Bombers, Jon Heyman is reporting the Chicago Cubs are close to a deal for the 28-year-old fireballer.

To acquire Chapman, the Cubs will reportedly have to give up shortstop Gleyber Torres — who is their top prospect — and more. Torres is currently ranked as the 24th-best prospect in baseball by MLB.com and is ranked 27th by Baseball America. He is just 19 and is already hitting .275 at High-A Myrtle Beach.

Jeff Passan has jumped in the mix also confirming the talks:

Chapman is one of baseball’s best closers and has had another excellent season. So far this year he has posted a 3-0 record, with 20 saves in 21 chances, a 2.01 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. He has struck out 44 while walking just eight in 31 appearances.

Chapman also comes with a significant amount of baggage. He was suspended 30 games in March thanks to a domestic violence incident in the offseason. During that altercation, Chapman allegedly choked his girlfriend and fired eight shots in the garage of his home in Florida.

The Cuban lefty will also be a free agent after the 2016 season, which appears to be the hold-up in the deal. The Cubs want Chapman to agree to a contract extension before making the deal.

The Yankees acquired Chapman from the Cincinnati Reds on December 28, 2015 in exchange for four minor leaguers.
