Drew Pomeranz just made his first All-Star team and now he’s on the move. The Boston Red Sox acquired the 27-year-old left-hander from the San Diego Padres on Thursday to bolster their starting staff.
A former No. 5 overall pick, Pomeranz has had a breakout season for the Friars. In a brilliant first half, he posted an 8-7 record, with a 2.47 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 115 strikeouts against 41 walks. He has held opponents to a National League-best batting average of .184. Pomeranz has already pitched a career-high 102 innings, so the Red Sox will likely have to monitor his pitch counts.
The early word suggests the Padres will receive highly regarded righty Anderson Espinoza in return. Baseball America lists the 18-year-old Espinoza as the No. 15 prospect in all of baseball.
