The Washington Nationals were looking for bullpen help. They obtained it, trading for Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Mark Melancon. The Pirates will get left-hander Felipe Rivero and relief pitcher Taylor Hearn.
Melancon, a three-time All-Star had converted 130/144 save opportunities over the last four seasons in Pittsburgh. He was due to be a free agent this winter, after earning $9.65 million in 2016.
Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon has completed one inning over his last three outings, allowing seven earned runs.
