Milwaukee Bucks Abandon Reason, Give Matthew Dellavedova Four-Year, $39 Million Deal

Matthew Dellavedova just agreed to a four-year, $39 million deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. I wish I had a punchline that could make this situation any more hilarious. I don’t. This is officially the worst contract handed out so far this year, even surpassing Timofey Mozgov’s ridiculous deal with the Lakers.

The NBA has become absurd as teams are throwing cash around like it’s Monopoly money. Dellavedova is going to make $9.5 million next year. We now officially live in The Matrix.

Dellavedova has spent three years being nothing more than an annoyance on an NBA floor. He’s played in 2015 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers and his career bests for points (7.5 per game), assists (4.4), rebounds (2.1) and minutes (24.6) all came this season.

Let’s break down Dellavedova’s numbers this year, shall we?

Win shares: 3.8

Offensive win shares: 2.2

Defensive win shares: 1.6

Win shares per 48 minutes: .093

Value over replacement player: 0.2

Offensive box plus/minus: -0.4

Defensive box plus/minus: -1.4

Player Efficiency Rating: 11.3

All of those numbers are well below average, yet the Bucks decided to give Dellavedova almost $10 million annually for the next four years. How? I mean, unless Milwaukee believed its one missing piece was a guy who could repeatedly punch opponents in the pills, I’m not sure what they were going for here.

Dellavedova is 25 and will never be anything other than a rarely effective backup point guard. The Cavs will have a chance to match Milwaukee’s offer, but if they even consider giving him that much money I’d seriously question LeBron James’ skills as a general manager.
