Matt Harvey Could Need Season-Ending Surgery

Matt Harvey has had an abominable season for the New York Mets and it likely just got worse. The former ace has stumbled to a 4-10 record, with a 4.86 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 17 starts. Now the 27-year-old might be done for the season.

Harvey was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a sore throwing shoulder. He flew to St. Louis to meet with a specialist and the news wasn’t good. Harvey has been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome which will almost certainly require surgery in the near future.

Harvey has the option of receiving pain-reducing shots for the next few months and playing out the season, or having season-ending surgery immediately. If he waits to have surgery it could put him out until the middle of next season.

Honestly, it might be best for everyone involved if Harvey were to go under the knife immediately. This season looks like a lost cause for him. His fastball velocity is down by an average of 1.5 mph, his strikeout rates are also down and his walk rates are up. The 2016 has been an abject disaster to this point.

The Mets should probably push Harvey to have surgery and hope he can get healthy and figure out what’s wrong with him. At this point he’s hurting himself and the team every time he’s on the hill.
