Greg Schiano Reportedly Witnessed Jerry Sandusky With a Boy in Shower While He Was Penn State Assistant

Greg Schiano–former Rutgers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and current Ohio State defensive coordinator–reportedly witnessed Jerry Sandusky “doing something to a boy in a shower,” according to testimony that came out in the unsealed Penn State documents released today.

That testimony came from the deposition of Mike McQueary, who witnessed a similar act with Sandusky and a boy in the shower in 2001, and went to Joe Paterno. After McQueary laid out in detail what he witnessed with Sandusky and how he had talked to Paterno, an attorney asked him if he talked about it with any other coaches.

McQueary testified that he had discussed with Penn State assistant coach Tom Bradley, and Bradley confirmed to McQueary that he was aware of other incidents, including when another assistant came Bradley in the early 1990’s. Here’s that excerpt from McQueary’s deposition:

McQueary depo regarding Schiano

Back in May, a report came out that six different Penn State assistants over the years had witnessed inappropriate conduct by Jerry Sandusky, including three in the early-to-mid 90’s. NBC News identified those three as coaches “who have gone on to work in the NFL and at Division I colleges.” Jim Caldwell, Detroit Lions head coach and a former Penn State assistant, immediately came out after that report and denied any knowledge. Given that there were only a handful of Penn State assistants that fit those descriptions, and Greg Schiano is the most high profile among them, our site reached out to Schiano in May to see if he had any comment, and he never responded.

Back in 2011, Schiano was asked if he had any inkling of what was going on with Sandusky, since he had been an assistant at Penn State for six years. He responded:

Because of the situation being what it is, I’m not even going to get into it. I’m so far removed. Again, you don’t need people making commentaries on things like this. It’s just a sad thing.

McQueary did not testify as to any knowledge about what happened after Schiano reportedly talked to Tom Bradley, and there is no indication or claim as to whether Schiano had a discussion with Joe Paterno. The Big Lead reached out again to Greg Schiano in light of his name appearing in McQueary’s deposition, and he has not responded.
