Cubs Entire Infield Will Start All-Star Game

The Chicago Cubs are having quite a season so far, and the Northsiders ticked off another milestone on Tuesday. The Cubs had five players named starters for the National League at this summer’s All-Star Game. That group included the team’s entire infield.

This is just the second time in baseball history a team’s entire infield will start an All-Star Game. It hasn’t happened since the St. Louis Cardinals accomplished the feat in 1963. Anthony Rizzo (first base), Ben Zobrist (second base), Addison Russell (shortstop) and Kris Bryant (third base) were all selected by the fan vote as starters for the July 12 contest.

In addition to those four, Dexter Fowler was voted one of the starters in the outfield. Pitchers Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester will both be on the team as well, giving the Cubs a total of seven All-Stars.

Major League Baseball’s All-Star voting system has always been deeply flawed, but given the numbers its hard to argue with the Cubs getting five guys elected to the team. Chicago currently has a 52-31 record, trailed slightly by the San Francisco Giants (53-32) and Texas Rangers (52-32) for the best mark in baseball.

The Cubs certainly deserved to stack the All-Star Game with players this summer.
