North Carolina's loss could be Illinois' gain
Big news breaking today, as the NBA is reportedly pulling out of Charlotte as the host of the 2017 All-Star game in response to their refusal to rescind or amend a recently-passed anti-LGBTQ law.
(You can read about all that here, and please if you have a take on the law itself and the league's decision, throw it in that bucket. Especially if it's a dumb take. Not one you think is dumb, but objectively dumb you just don't know it yet. Get out in front of it!)
What's of local interest is that though New Orleans is the front-runner to be the new host of the game, Brian Windhorst is hearing that Chicago is also under consideration to get the game.
That'd be cool. Jerry Reinsdorf, in a 2012 interview, disagreed, citing the pain that All-Star game hosting puts on the Deerfield Dentists who buy Dwyane Wade and newly-numbered Doug McDermott jerseys:
"They'd have to force me to take the All-Star Game," Jerry Reinsdorf said. "They take over the building, your season-ticket holders have to be in a lottery to see if they get tickets and then they don't get a good ticket. Really, no good can come out of it and all it can do is upset your fans."
Chicago hasn't hosted the All-Star game since 1988, when it was held at Chicago Stadium.
