Arthur Jones has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating its policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Arthur is a defensive lineman for the Indianapolis Colts and the older brother of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who is facing a potential two-year suspension for PED use. These were just the latest two setbacks in what has been an awful last few months for the Jones family.
Arthur and Jon’s younger brother Chandler Jones was traded by the New England Patriots to the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. While that doesn’t seem like a big deal, the swap likely had something to do with the 26-year-old’s off-field habits. He was hospitalized six days before the Patriots took on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs. It turned out Chandler had a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana, which is legal in Massachusetts, but certainly frowned upon by the NFL.
On September 29, 2015 Jon Jones pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident related to an April 2015 hit-and-run. He will avoid a felony charge if he lives up to the conditions of his 18 months of supervised probation. The incident led to Jones being stripped of his title and an indefinite suspension.
He returned to fight Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197 on April 23, 2016 and won a fairly boring five-round unanimous decision. He was set to face light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier at UFC 200, but was forced to bow out three days before the event thanks to his positive PED test.
Meanwhile, Arthur signed a five-year, $33 million contract with the Colts back in 2014 and was expected to make an immediate impact on the team’s defense. That hasn’t happened. On September 5, 2015, the 30-year-old was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, missing the entire season.
So to recap: in the last year, between them, the three Jones boys have twice been popped for using performance-enhancing drugs, pleaded guilty to charges related to a hit and run, been hospitalized for a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana and missed an entire NFL season thanks to an ankle injury. That’s a really bad few months.
Hopefully they can turn it around.
