The Northern Trust Open kicks off on Thursday at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. Five of the world’s top 10 golfers are in the field, including Rory McIlroy, who will make his 2016 U.S. debut at the event. This is also McIlroy’s first appearance at the event and his first ever appearance in the U.S. during the west coast swing. McIlroy has only played in two events this season, both were European Tour events and both he finished in the top 10. He appears confident this week as he’s taking stabs at Brandel Chamblee on Twitter over his weightlifting routine.
Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose, and Dustin Johnson are also in the field along with Sergio Garcia and Adam Scott.
Last year’s winner, James Hahn hasn’t won since his last appearance at Riviera and is currently listed at 100/1 odds, but that’s kind of how the 2016 season has gone. An unlikely winner will very likely be at the top on Sunday. The real question is whether or not they’ll be able to hold off the field like Vaughn Taylor did last week after Phil Mickelson missed a putt on the 72nd hole. It won’t be a surprise if someone ranked outside the top 30 comes away with a win, of course it won’t be a surprise if Jordan Spieth comes away with a win either.
