Mark Cuban was interviewed by CBC about the NBA Draft lottery, of which the Mavs owner is evidently not a fan. “I think it creates a race to the bottom,” he said. “I think there’s better alternatives. I know in the NBA I don’t think it’s gonna change anytime soon, but we’ve discussed having a slotting situation where rookies coming in would be free agents.”
Under Cuban’s alternative, the worst teams would have more budget to sign the best rookies, but those players would not be bound to whomever drafts them. Therefore, they could sign with better franchises, coaches, and teammates for less money. “I think that would cause teams to have to be better organizationally, and make the league better,” he said.
