Manchester United and FIFA: The Headline Is All That Matters

Manchester United lost its vital Europa League Round of 32 away leg to FC Midtjylland 2-1. More than a dozen United players missed the match due to injury. Midfielder Nick Powell missed the match, because he was playing FIFA.

Don’t get me wrong. A Manchester United player missing a match because he was playing FIFA would be absolutely hilarious. But, contrary to the headlines, that’s not what happened.

Powell was loaned to Hull City on Feb. 1, 2016. His contract remains with Manchester United. But, for all intents and purposes, he is a Hull player for the remainder of the season.

Maybe Powell could watch his friends on an off night out of solidarity. But, he was under no obligation to do so. Thus, the logical premise of the headline, that a soccer player missed a match obligation due to playing FIFA, is invalid.

Believe it or not, Powell will miss the majority of Manchester United’s match the rest of this season, when he is playing in (or obligated to attend) Hull City matches.

But, this whole thing would have been cool if it did happen, you can technically make that headline work, and no one reads the text anyway. So, yay journalism!
